Lecturer in Information and Communication Technology devises a new system called the “quick pic” system used to start conversations.

The author says: “My system uses quotes by famous as well as ordinary people. They are true to life and is categorized and illustrated by pictures for easier remembering. It makes great reading and great conversation starters.”

Conversation starters

It was found that conversation starters can help any person build bridges with other people. To throw in a quote forces the issue and makes it almost impossible not to have that conversation! Obviously the quotes must be uncomplicated to be remembered and used with great effect. Quotes from real life are more interesting to people and easier to use. Quotes can be made easier to remember if they are categorized. The key to good conversation starters is the relevance to real life so that everybody can associate with it. Using pictures to illustrate the quotes make them easier to remember and thus forms real good conversation starters. It is much better to throw a quote into the conversation than to criticize or blame someone and have to backpedal because of making a faux pas. Lots of times it is difficult to think what to do to get a higher level of conversation going and a quote is just the thing. In really tough situations maybe some “story starters” are needed, but then the quote gets too long. Using a quote as a starter, it will later be easier to move the conversation over to ‘what about this company’ or ‘current events’. Quotes certainly serve better as a conversation piece than they ever did hidden away in some dusty book. In the home usually, quotes can be more than conversation starters, engaging families in a more realistic discussion of what happens in the house.

How it worked

The author got quotes from all over, from journals, from books, from friends, from anywhere really, it just takes some observation. The author said “When I started lecturing I always found it difficult to get going, because, I really wasn’t in to speaking in public. I started to write these quotes down in a little notebook of interesting quotes I like to keep. Then I did a little experiment: I began dropping quotes in any kind of conversation, and it worked. People always agree or disagree, and that makes a great starting point to get the conversation going.”

A Book Some people use a few quotes all the time to start talking to unfamiliar people. With a whole quote book it can take the concept to a whole new dimension. Following is an extract of a few quotes from such a book:

While researching the subject the author found that to help to remember the quote better, it is best to categorize the quotes, and even easier to remember when it is accompanied by an illustration. That lead to the creation of just such a book. This little book is a pastiche of pieces from books, witty quotes and curious illustrations, with bias toward the funny. All short enough to remember easily. Great fun to read and great conversation starters.

Conclusion

After extensive research into the matter it was found that quotes can definitely help to get a conversation going. It even helps to kick some life into an already going, but stagnating conversation, or to change the flow if it gets too close to confrontation, or a sensitive issue. It really works!

Good Conversation Starters
When you are meeting new people or getting yourself introduced, it is important that you have some good conversation starters, as it will make you and the other person more relaxed and comfortable.

Most of us lack this basic social skill and tend to make a mess of the entire situation.
You might not be able to find the right words or topics to start a conversation and this can make you tongue tied. However you need not worry, as it is a skill that can be easily learned. There are certain clichés that we tend to use and these are best avoided.

Here are some Conversation Starters Tips to hopefully get your conversations rolling

• The most common conversational topics include talking about the weather, school or college, movies, songs, holidays, hobbies, food or any event that was recently in the news.

• Never choose one of those cheap pick up lines to impress anyone as it is bound to backfire. Most people are put off by those sleazy pick up lines. Learn to keep it simple and straight forward and do with some style of your own.

• If the situations allows do some background research about the person you are going to meet. Awareness about their likes and dislikes will help you start a conversation easily.

• Be your natural self and choose a topic that both of you can talk about in a comfortable manner. If the other person reacts positively to the topic that you had started, you can continue with it, otherwise it would be best to change the topic immediately. On to my last Conversation Starters Tip:

• Do not try to use the same topics with every individual you meet. Everybody has different tastes, likes and dislikes and depending on the individual you meet, you should be able to make changes to your conversational starters.
You can be able to improve your social life as you can master the skill of a good conversation.

After you’ve identified possible environments to go meet people live in person, it is time for starting conversations. Many people have social anxiety when thinking about how to make conversation with strangers, but there is a simple 3 Step System called S-C-R that I use to start a conversation that I will share with you:

1) “S” is for Smile

When you meet someone it’s important that you put yourself in a good state, be playful and make it fun by thinking “How can I connect with this person?”

2) “C” is for Compliment

Pick something physical or anything you learn about them to acknowledge. Examples include, “I really like those earrings” or “That’s really neat you’ve been part of Big Brother program for last 3 years.”

3) “R” is for Rapport

Be genuinely interested and ask questions. Find out what matters to people and LISTEN to what they have to say. They key to communication is listening, not speaking.
