Prop 8: Marriage Ban Upheld. Here’s What’s Next
Prop 8 was upheld by the Supreme Court today. This is a big setback: although the existing marriages will remain, the ban will continue to prevent any new marriages. But the fight’s not over: we’re bringing it back to the ballot, probably as soon as next year. The most effective way to prepare is by having conversations. You need to talk to everyone know know — EVERYONE — about why marriage equality is personally important to you. We know that we’ll win this fight soon; working together, we can turn this difficult news into an eventual victory.

Hi, I’m Matt from Stop8.org with breaking news about marriage equality. The California Supreme Court just ruled on Prop 8, the marriage ban, and the results are mixed. On one hand, the 36,000 people who got married last year can stay married. But the court also ruled that nobody else can get married — so if youre like me and you missed your chance, you’re out of luck. For now.
This is a setback — but its actually not as bad as it sounds, because of something great that weve learned from our recent victories in other states: the more people talk about marriage equality, the faster public support grows. That means that even when the news is bad, it’s still a great opportunity to start conversations; and each conversation brings us closer to winning the fight. So — whats next?
Were bringing it back to the ballot, probably in about a year. Organizations like Courage Campaign and Equality California are already laying the groundwork to defend equality, and you can do your part too.
The most important thing that you can do TODAY is to reach out to everyone you know — EVERYONE. Tell them why you personally care about the freedom to marry, and how marriage equality personally affects you. Visit stop8.org for more tips, conversation starters, and to connect with more allies and organizations.
Todays news is hard to take. But this is just one step in a fight that we know we’ll win. WHEN we win all depends on how many people you can talk to. This ruling gives us a one-of-a-kind opportunity to change peoples minds. So even though it looks bad — in the long run, it makes us stronger. Now, working together, we can regain marriage equality, and protect it for all time.

In this commercial we see a girl starting a conversation with a guy because of the watch he is wearing. She comments on the loaded features of the watch. After knowing that it’s got a lot of features, she playfully asks him “is there anything your watch doesn’t have?” And pat comes the reply from the guy “your phone number”.
