Look for an outstanding feature of the person you would like to start a conversation with especially look for tattoos a t-shirt or outfit they’re are wearing or if you are at an event talk about the event.
I've only found 2 so far:
1. Which sex do you think has it easier in our culture?
2. Do you think western culture has become over-sexualized in recent years?
You can ask anyone these and they lead to a lengthy talk. I'm looking for anything like these.
Why don't you just look up some interesting questions on here? You can talk about color! Did you know that babies cry more in a yellow room than any other? It is because the brightest colors reflect more light and can tire the eyes. Did you know that the colors yellow and red make you hungry and that most fast food restaurants utilize them? If you paint your kitchen blue, you'll eat less because it is an appetite suppressor.
Another one I saw on CNN was this guy who was saying that the internet is ruining our culture. That would be a good topic.
Im going on a date with this guy and i don't want it to be awkward before the movie starts, we've talked on the phone a couple times and it's starting to get less awkward.

something funny or a stupid saying is always good.

then there's always your typical "hey, whats up" "whats new" "whatcha doin?"
especially with people i don't speak to very often — small talk only takes you so far! what can i do to keep a smooth flow of (interesting) convo going without looking like a blabbering idiot?
So many people ask if you've seen a good movie lately, I like to ask if you've seen a bad movie lately so I know what to avoid. Then that usually leads into a conversation about the worst movies ever, memorable scenes, etc. Everyone likes or dislikes movies, so it's always worked for me.

Maybe things like….hey how are you? Are you from around here? (Depending on age) What do you do for a living? Do you have any kids or pets? etc etc
